Mother of the Groom

by admin on June 6, 2013 in Family with No Comments

After the wedding, the groom will likely keep connecting with his dad in ways that males do, but the wedding is sort of the official last time that he will connect with his mom as her son.

He will always technically be her son, but not having any brothers or grown sons of my own, I had never before considered the dynamic of grieving the relationship change of a son while simultaneosly celebrating the relationship gain of a daughter-in-law.

Thought for the Week: Psalm 16:6

by admin on May 12, 2013 in Family, Thought for the Week with No Comments

Abba, my life is ultimately a gift from You.  Let me rejoice in the good that has been passed down to me and let me surrender the bad.  I desire to be a good steward of my life and to leave a goodly heritage, a legacy that would point all aspects of my life to You, the Living God Who loves us.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Father’s Blessing

by admin on March 28, 2013 in Communication, Family with 14 Comments

Because we don’t entertain the notion of a dowry anymore and because this meeting might be intimidating, it’s easy to view the father’s blessing as an antiquated act that is no longer relevant to our age of independence. Honoring one’s parents, however, is never an irrelevant act. Although you cannot force your fiancé to do this, you can ask him to and you can pray that he will.

Lord, You are the One Who gathers. You are the Prince of Peace. I know that one day all will be restored. Until then, will You gather the generations together for times of peace in which they would know You better? Use my wedding for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Unthinkable

So as you are planning to commit your life to your beloved, remember to consider how you can love them and provide for them even after you are gone. I know it can be a downer to think about death, so definitely choose your timing wisely, but I so strongly encourage you not to shy away from preparing for your death. Planning for how you will be leaving your spouse when you die is an inevitable part of your life-long commitment to him and thus a tangible way that you can demonstrate love.

Thought for the Week: Ruth 1:16-17

by admin on December 2, 2012 in Family, Thought for the Week with No Comments

Lord, Divine Orchestrator, You knew who my in-laws would be before I ever met them. You are a redemptive God, and I pray that You would use my in-laws for good in my life and marriage, as well as me for good in theirs. Heal wounds that need healing and continue to open opportunities for me to love and respect them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
