Reason 9: You Can’t Change Him

The adage, “Women marry men hoping they will change; men marry women hoping they won’t,” isn’t always far from the truth.

The things that attract you to your fiancé now are probably the things that will start bugging you later.  You love that he’s a man’s man, but later you feel cheated that he’s not empathetic.  You respect that he’s a hard worker, but later you resent that he’s never home.  You admire that he’s funny in a crowd, but later you wish he could yield the spotlight to another.

It’s strange how it works, but it is frequently true.  Inevitably, in some way, you will want to change your husband.

But as my mother told me, for better and for worse, you can’t change him.

God knows we will try, which is why all those verses about nagging wives are in Proverbs.  It’s why 1 Peter 3 speaks on modeling growth to our husbands, not dictating it.

It’s also why, in part, God gave us His Holy Spirit.  God wants to redeem and transform us into the image of Christ, “that he might be the firstborn among many brothers” (Romans 8:29b), and so He gave us the Holy Spirit to do the tough work in us (2 Corinthians 3:17-18).

The same Spirit that raised Jesus from death to life again is the Spirit that we have at work in us (Romans 8:11), which means—drum roll, please—the Spirit is also at work in your fiancé.

You can finally let go of the reins and give them back to God, trusting that God’s purpose for your husband will prevail.
