Be Still

“Be still, and know that I am God!  I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10, NRSV)

Sometimes we need those first two little words to remind us to pause.  In the perspective of the “now,” every urgent task seems so important, every unmet expectation seems catastrophic, and every met goal seems trivial against the interminable to-do list.  But God says, stop anyway.

Stop for a moment and look.  Observe the grandeur of the clouds.  Marvel at the miraculous mechanics of your living body.  Enjoy the colors and the movement of everyday art around you.

Stop for a moment and listen.  Hear the thunder of planes overhead and cars rushing past.  Listen even still for the chirping melody of the birds and the rhythm of your own breath.  Savor the hush of the Holy Spirit that beckons you to the Father.

Regain the eternal perspective on your life.

Your planning will continue in a moment.  But for now, just be still.   Know that God is God, the creator of the cosmos, the redeemer of man, the victor over death, the ruler of nations and earth.  He is worth your time and attention, and you can trust Him with your stress, your tasks, your sorrow, your needs, your dreams, your fears…

Be still and worship because He is God.
