Shopping That Can Change the World

Ah, the sweet satisfaction of shopping.

There is something victorious about finding a good deal for something that perfectly fits your selected need.  Like finding the right piece of the puzzle or solving a clue in a treasure hunt.

Of course we need to be careful to avoid entitlement, greed, and other such deceitful notions as we spend God’s loaned money on products or services of our determined needs or desires.  But if we are shopping within the bounds of good stewardship, it can be joyous and rewarding.

An organization called Trade As One stands on the forefront of education about Fair Trade, which is a business model that helps empower people of impoverished nations to maintain legitimate employment.  Fair Trade is a prime opportunity for shopping as a good steward.

Trade As One’s mission, “… to use fair trade to promote sustainable business and break cycles of poverty and dependency in the developing world,” is largely executed through their user-friendly hub for Fair-Trade shopping.  As you are doing your wedding planning shopping (and even every-day shopping), you can buy conscience-clear items from Trade As One that you would normally buy elsewhere anyway.

Chocolate, coffee, jewelry, baking items, kitchen staples, journals, stationery, Christmas cards…

In purchasing any of these items through Fair Trade stores, and specifically through Trade As One, you are ensuring that your dollar does not abet human slavery but does contribute to legitimate means of business for men and women in impoverished nations.

Stay tuned for the next post to learn how you can plan a Fair Trade bridal tea.
