Thought for the Week: Genesis 28:16

“Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!'” (Genesis 28:16).

Pastor Bill Crawford of Water’s Edge Church was recently explaining to me the word Bethel.  Beth means house and El means God.  Bethel, the name given to the place where Jacob dreams of angels ascending and descending the ladder between heaven and earth and where God blesses Jacob and his descendants, means House of God—or “the Lord is in this place.”

Even knowing that God is omnipresent and knowing that we are His temples, have you ever been staggered by the realization that God is actually with you?  Do you ever receive a clear word from Him or an unexpected provision or a change of heart in a troubled relationship that surprises you?  Do you ever witness endurance from the broken or humility from the powerful that reminds you God is at work among us?

I challenge you to list your needs, your concerns, your worries—in the midst of wedding planning, there are surely many—and keep your eyes open for how God engages you in those.  Pray in faith that He hears, He cares, and He dwells near.  Don’t let your life go by without knowing that God has been there with you all along; He is in the place where you are.

Lord, Elohim, Emmanuel, You are the One Who cares!  You have had Your hand upon me from the beginning, and You continue to be faithful to me, pursuing me despite my indifference or rebellion.  Teach me Your ways, O Lord!  As You are with me, let all whom I interact with see Your face.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
