Thought for the Week: Isaiah 54:2-3

“Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes. For you will spread out to the right and to the left; your descendants will dispossess nations and settle in their desolate cities” (Isaiah 54:2-3).

What promise in this passage!  A restored nation with generations of growth and favor to follow.  God is in the business of redeeming, rebuilding, and restoring.  In marriage, He is no different.

You and your fiancé are enlarging the site of your tent during your engagement.  Just as one can’t construct a sturdy tent on a site that isn’t cleared and leveled, neither can a couple construct a marriage on a relationship that isn’t healed and united.  You are preparing the foundation of your marriage by prayer, pre-marital counseling, quality time, conversation, and even, practically speaking, house hunting.

I love that God says, “Do not hold back.”  When you go through the preparations of enlarging your site, stretching out your curtains, lengthening your cords, and strengthening your stakes, you are not to hold back.  If marriage is your tent, go all in.  Be bold, abundant, and confident in your preparation.  Know that as you stretch, lengthen, and strengthen, and as you are spread out to the right and the left, you might experience discomfort, discord, and discouragement because of the growth process.  But you can trust God to magnify your growth and rebuild the two of you into one mighty team; none of that process is wasted.  Your marriage is full of God’s promise.

Lord, thank You so much for my fiancé.   I cannot wait to enlarge the site of our tent and to prepare today so that our tent is expansive and sturdy tomorrow.  Give us grace, hope, and strength during the moments that he and I experience growing pains.  Fill our marriage with Your promise.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
