Thought for the Week: James 5:17

“Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years” (James 5:17).

Praying can feel futile when days, months, and even years go by without sight of a favorable answer.  I call these prayers long-term requests.  They are the ones that challenge me not to lose heart.  They are the ones that I can forget I had been praying for until God answers them years down the line and I am reminded of previous stretches of prayer (thank goodness for prayer journals!).  They are the ones that beckon me to wait on God’s timing and to trust in God’s faithfulness.

All the while, there are numerous short-term requests that God answers without any delay.  I find myself constantly amazed that God is One Who hears, One Who cares, and One Who responds.  God is attentive to our needs.  Elijah’s prayer for God to hold back the rain reminds me of that.  God held it back!  And when Elijah prayed that it would rain again, God answered that prayer too.  It was a cut and dry response from God to Elijah’s prayer, which creates such a vivid picture for me of God’s attentiveness.

Rather than looking at the long-term requests in frustration, feeling like God is not aware of my needs, I try to marvel at how precise and quick He is in answering the short-term requests.  Having consistent amazement and proof that God hears, cares, and responds strengthens my faith to truly believe that God is indeed answering (in His timing and manner) those long-term requests that I am waiting on Him for.

As a wife, you will have many long-term requests for your husband, your marriage, your home, your vocation, and your community.  Use your wedding and other finite seasons to look for God’s answers to short-term prayers so you can establish a foundation of faith in your prayer life on which you can build your marriage.

Lord, praise You, Jesus, that You know all things.  Your insight and Your timing is perfect.  You truly hear my prayers.  Not only do You hear them, but You cherish them and respond in the way that brings You the most glory.  Praise be to God, the attentive One!   Build my faith to trust in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
