Thought for the Week: Mark 2:27-28

“Then he said to them, ‘The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath'”(Mark 2:27-28).

I love sleep.  I love rest.  I love relaxing leisure activities.  But if I haven’t planned those into my schedule, I will just keep going.  I love creating and planning.  I love productivity.  I love accomplishment.  Being sure to rest each week and to set aside time to delight in the Lord and not pursue my own affairs (Isaiah 58:14) is a matter of faith for me.

And God has proven faithful every time.  He always returns dividends on the time I invest in Him.  Setting aside one day a week to depart from our efficiency and ambition and to instead rest and rejoice in Him makes our relationship with God richer and our return to daily routines more fruitful.

Yet even in God’s wisdom of creating the Sabbath, He offers grace.  As Jesus demonstrates, acts that might legally be considered work are still good on the holy day if they are done for the good of the Lord, done in love and faith.  God created the Sabbath as a gift to us, not as a punishment.

Lord, God of Peace, take the worry from me.  I run myself into the ground because I truly believe that my life will not succeed if I don’t do everything I’m doing.  I have trouble delegating to others, and I have trouble taking a break.  Cancel my pride, and forgive me for my busyness.  Let me savor my time with You.  Refresh and restore me so that my life would be lived for You and not for me.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
