The Sweet Christian Bride

Thought for the Week: Matthew 22:8-9

“Then he said to his slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy.  Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet'” (Matthew 22:8-9).

I know this passage is a parable for the kingdom of heaven, but I can’t help but be struck by two important points from its literal meaning.  As a bride, I had so many opinions about who should come to my wedding.  I may have outright fought about it, but if I didn’t, I certainly sulked about it when my way wasn’t how it was going to be.  So petty, but getting married was such a big deal to me that my emotions ran pretty high.

But what if I had gone through the guest list process with total peace that God had it all under control?  What if I considered it an honor and an opportunity to have people I wasn’t close to be a part of my wedding?  The king in this story invited everyone he could find.  Those often end up being exactly the people who God wants.

Some friends of mine invited an engaged couple whom they didn’t know very well because they thought it might bless them to see a Christian wedding as they were considering their own.  Maybe you know people whom you can invite for their sake, not for yours.  Most brides will have some people at their wedding (think distant relatives or parents’ colleagues) that they don’t know very well.  We have opportunity to be open-handed, trusting that God will orchestrate the guest list.

The second thing is that the king initially invited his intended guests, but when none of them came, he had a Plan B.  He was indeed furious, but he didn’t let it ruin the party.  Guests lists are tricky.  They won’t always go as planned.  Some will be there whom you don’t want, and some won’t be there whom you do.  But God is truly in control of your guest list.  Let your Plan B unfold and enjoy who is there rather than regret who is not.

Lord, You are the One Who gathers according to Your will.  Be the orchestrator of my guest list and bring those who need to meet with You.  You know the desires of our hearts in terms of whom we long to have at our sides during the wedding.  Please honor those according to Your will.  And give me peace and grace through this difficult process.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
