Thought for the Week: Proverbs 21:31

“The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord”(Proverbs 21:31).

Your engagement is a time of learning how to draw near to each other in oneness.  Your marriage will be a similar investigation, although with deeper application and significance.  It is so helpful, therefore, to read books on marriage, to attend marriage seminars, and to go to pre-marital or marital counseling.  In those “learning labs,” you can become rich in tools and strategy that can deeply bless your marriage.

But at the end of the day, no degree of preparedness will guarantee us victory.  It is by God’s grace that we are able to fight the good fight and endure through hardship.  His wisdom will trump marriage books every time.  His Word will reveal more than a marriage seminar.  His strength will empower more than a marriage counselor.   We should do all that we can to put our marriages in positions to succeed, but—lest we tout our own pride—we need to acknowledge the Lord in all that we do.  In Him is the victory!

Lord,  victorious and almighty God, protect my marriage.  Use the steps that we take for our marriage health and multiply their impact for good.  Cancel our pride, and help us never to forget that we need You.  Be our wisdom, strength, and revelation.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
