Thought for the Week: Proverbs 31:10

“A capable wife who can find?  She is far more precious than jewels” (Proverbs 31:10).

Being at a job where I use my hands frequently in transactions with patients, I often get the comment, “What a beautiful ring!  How long have you been married?”  I love that!  I love that there is an overt symbol of my marriage in a place where people can see and can recognize its beauty.

If I’m ever mugged, I can tell you that fool is going to have a fight before he walks away with my wedding ring.  I’m not a sentimentalist, and sure, a ring can always be replaced, but I love my ring because my husband picked it out for me when he decided I was set apart for him.  And wearing it is my response: that he is set apart for me and that I will live set apart for him.

No matter what kind of engagement or wedding ring you choose (if you choose one), it will be significant to you—worth more than any price could name.  And when we filter that within the perspective of our worth in Christ, how much greater is the notion that we are more precious than jewels!  To think that our husbands married us without even knowing fully what it meant to love us, and that Christ died for us before we were holy or perfected.  Amazing.  You are worthy, friend, as you are, no matter how you feel about yourself or what you are going through.  Your husband thinks so and Christ gave His life to prove so.

Holy God, merciful and sacrificial Savior, that You find me worthy is astounding, but I am ever grateful.  May my life not be stained by insecurities or by pursuit of worth through my endeavors, but rather may I be a good steward of this life You have gifted to me.  May I root my identity in Christ and live as one who is worthy, more precious than jewels.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
