Thought for the Week: Psalm 139:1-4

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely” (Psalm 139:1-4).

If you are anything like me, you will appreciate hearing that there is no need to become anxious if you find yourself lying in bed unable to sleep the night before your wedding.  Your adrenaline will kick in and your body will know what to do during the ceremony and reception no matter how un-refreshed you might feel when your alarm goes off.

And if you do indeed find yourself restless in bed wishing you could savor some zzzz’s before the big day, take solace in the fact that God knows every move you make. He knows that you are lying there unable to sleep. He even knows the thoughts spinning in your mind that never make it to your lips lest you wake yourself up more. He is intimately with you and involved in your restlessness.

How sweet a solace to turn to the One who knows right where and how you are. Maybe He desires you to pray over something or someone as you lie there. Maybe reciting a verse or singing a song will calm your busy thoughts. Or maybe just the thought of knowing that He knows of your restless night will make His presence with you all the more real.

Lord, You know my lying downs. You know when I am asleep and when I’m awake. You know all the thoughts that rush through my mind. You know my body and what kind of energy I will need to thrive on my wedding day. Let me rest in that assurance even if my body is unable to claim rest the night before the big day. Be glorified even in my restlessness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
