Thought for the Week: Psalm 139:23-24

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts.  See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24).

Sometimes I forget that every day a battle is being waged for my soul.  I see it as just another day in my routine.  Or another day to check off before the weekend.  If I’m particularly tired or busy, then I often lack the strength to activate my spirit.  Instead, I muster enough energy to get my body from place to place.  Usually I’m on auto-pilot for portions of the day, and when I’m not, my engagement is just enough to get the job done well.  On these days, there is not much room for pursuing God and for demonstrating love to people.  On these days, the battle seems lost.

Thankfully, I know that God wins the battle for my soul in the end, but many days I seem to play right into the hand of the enemy.  Stretched too thin, and thus fatigued into apathy.  And on those days, I’m not even always aware that I am harboring sin in my heart.  Instead, I will scroll through the moments behind me and come up blank as I seek to confess my sin to the Lord.  That’s when I turn to this prayer.  God, You search me.  Find that sin and get it far from me, so I can walk with You into the victory of the fight for my soul.  Amen. Every day I’m a sinner, even if I can’t track my errors and omissions.  Therefore, every day I need God to fight for my soul.

Lord, “search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts.  See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way” (Psalm 139:23-24).  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
