Thought for the Week: Psalm 42:1-2

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.  My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” (Psalm 42:1-2)

I crave milk chocolate.  I obsess over chai lattes.  I need sleep.  I understand what it means to desire the fulfillment of a pleasure or need, yet none of those desires come close to the pangs for sustenance that lies out of reach.  Picture this deer panting for even just drops to restore his energy.  Picture the Israelites who went so far as to reject their Lord because they believed no water was coming.  Picture families in the dregs of impoverished countries who have no drinkable water.  Do we pant for God?  Are we desperate for Him?  Does our true need for Him outweigh our desire for fulfillment of pleasures and earthly needs?

Lord, You are the bread of life and the living water.  Satisfy my thirsty soul.  Where I am overly hydrated with earthly refreshment, replace it with thirst for You.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
