Thought for the Week: Psalm 74: 16-17

“But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed a wearisome task, until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I perceived their end”(Psalm 74:16-17).

Sometimes things look bleak.  How could good come from this circumstance?  I don’t know.  One could drive herself mad thinking of the pain and suffering in this world.  To a lesser degree, even thinking of the opportunities that don’t pan out or the people who irritate can add up to a cycle of despair.

As the psalmist couldn’t fathom the seemingly prosperous and carefree lives of the wicked, so too can we get caught up in whatever circumstance creates challenge for us, whether trivial or significant.  What the psalmist did was to turn his eyes to the Lord.  In the sanctuary of the Lord, all things became clear; all crooked thinking was straightened.  Eternal perspective trumped the psalmist’s momentary perspective.

Whether your wedding planning is going awry or your relationship is snagged by differences and hardships, there is an eternal perspective in which you can find much peace.  Shifting your focus from the mess to the Lord can calm the tempest of the unknown in your heart.

Lord, Magnificent God, You know all things.  You have a perspective that encompasses eternity and that sees things perfectly.  Forgive my despair.  Forgive my impatience and my bitterness.  Fix my eyes on Jesus and bring to my spirit a peace that passes all understanding.  I can do all things by Your strength.  Move me forward, even in this circumstance, so that I might bring glory to Your name.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
