Thought for the Week: Psalm 90:17

“Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper the work of our hands—O prosper the work of our hands!” (Psalm 90:17).

Anytime that I prepare for a “performance” of some sort—be it writing, teaching, public speaking, etc.—I hit a point where I just have to stop practicing.  Even if I could memorize the entire talk, I still would have no guarantee that I could recite it perfectly.  Or even if I could edit a piece to be 100% free from grammatical errors, I still would not be able to control how people interpreted my writing.  Sure, this leaves room for my nerves to get jumpy, which I never like, but this also opens the door of my heart to recognize that I need God in order to have any shadow of success.  The more seasoned at writing or speaking that I become, the more I am grateful for that point when I have to stop preparing and say, “God, it’s up to You.  Please show up and use it.” I know the reason why my gratitude for this has increased is that He has proven faithful to use my efforts every single time.  Even if it’s not in the way that I was hoping, He has either used my efforts to teach me something or to bless others.  Often, it’s both.

It certainly takes faith to turn efforts over to God, but it is so exciting and always yields a greater reward than our own efforts could.  This is amply true in wedding planning.  All of your effort to align details within a certain price and time-frame in order to yield a certain effect… it adds up to so much more than just a wedding.  God can use those details (even the ones that don’t go according to your plans) to impact eternity.  It’s a beautiful ride to loosen your grip on the details and come to a point in your preparation where you say, “I’ve done all I can do as a good steward of this wedding, and now, Lord, it’s up to You.  Use the wedding and all its details for Your glory.”  Stand back and watch what our faithful God does!

Jesus, You are more glorious than I could ever imagine.  Your sovereignty reaches beyond where I can see.  Your wisdom is more profound than I could ever comprehend.  Forgive me for knowing all that yet keeping control to myself.  I desire to control the process, and I desire credit for the results I yield.  But I know in my heart, my control barely scratches the surface of Your purpose.  Help me to do Kingdom work in my wedding planning, that all of my efforts would be for You, and help me to release the details to You so that You might perfect my efforts for Your glory.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
