Thought for the Week: Romans 15:5-7

“Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one accord, you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God” (Romans 15:5-7, NASB).

Disagreements will happen.  They hurt when they are between you and the one your soul loves above any other, but they will happen nonetheless.  And when they do, such growth, refining, and unity can result when they are handled with the grace and humility of the Spirit.

The disagreements might come in your wedding decisions.  Perhaps they will be over where to live or how to budget in your first years together.  Likely there will be some disagreements regarding extended families, especially if around the holiday times.  Whether these disagreements are trivial or beastly, begin developing with your fiancé a habit of prayer—that you would take every thought captive, making it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5), and desire God’s glory, as well as oneness with your fiancé, over and above your selfish ambitions.  Use Romans 15:5-7, a powerful verse, as a prayer to surrender the disagreement to God and let Him bring about a decision of unity, even in the seeming stalemate of an argument.

Lord, God of Truth and Peace, with You there is always a way that is good.  Show us how to get past this disagreement.  You Who gives perseverance and encouragement, please give us the same mind with one another so that, with oneness, we can be on the same page in a way that brings You glory.  Help us to receive and embrace each other and extend grace to one another, even in our differences, as You have done for us.  Be glorified in our relationship, Lord, as You bring us into oneness.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
