Thought for the Week: Zechariah 8:4-5

“Thus says the Lord of hosts: Old men and old women shall again sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each with staff in hand because of their great age.  And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in its streets”(Zechariah 8:4-5).

A picture of Zion restored.  What is it?  Kids getting to be kids and elders getting to be elderly.  In times of war or strife, kids have to grow up fast and the elderly have to live beyond their limitations if they are to survive.  But getting to relish the stage of life that one is in is a sign of peace.

When I read this passage in Zechariah, I thought of a wedding.  Family usually gathers at weddings, bringing together people of many generations.  Kids get to be carefree and elders get to be honored all because they are gathered for the holy ceremony and celebration of a wedding.  Your wedding can be the place of peace for your family to gather.  In the harmony of multiple generations, each member of your family just might catch a glimpse of Zion.

Lord, You are the One Who gathers.  You are the Prince of Peace.  I know that one day all will be restored.  Until then, will You gather the generations together for times of peace in which they would know You better?  Use my wedding for Your glory.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
